Position: Unix Engineer Location: Lansing, MI Duration: Long Term Contract Client: Tech Mahindra/JNL Job Purpose The Unix Engineer II develops, supports, and deploys stable and cost-effective Unix environments. The Engineer plays a critical role in the installation and monitoring of Unix and Linux operating system and virtual machine sub-system software, as well as the deployment of various Unix server hardware components. The Engineer develops and maintains disaster recovery procedures and leverages these procedures regularly for system maintenance. Automation is an essential principle the Engineer we use for offloading standard work, so the team can continue engineering the high performance, scalable solutions that power the business. Skills: - Architects and deploys UNIX servers and operating systems, including server hardware, virtualization technologies, and Unix/Linux operating systems both on-premises and cloud-based.
- Responsible for the latest IBM Power, Cisco UCS, Dell, and HP equipment (often to their limits), and use virtualization, replication, and clustering to scale and protect the environment.
- Develops and improves processing standards, procedures, and automation for use by IT staff in a constantly growing and evolving environment.
- ·Provides technical support and servers as a cross-team technical lead to IT staff during systems designs, developments and deployments.
- Participates in a 24/7 on-call rotation, providing level 3 escalations and project work.
- Deep troubleshooting in an advanced, integrated environment.
- Works closely with software vendors and coordinates third-party software installs and evaluates the compliance of installs to the organization standards.
- Provides leadership and mentoring to junior staff in technical, customer, and project management skills.
- Good knowledge of SQL for use with reporting and scripting.
